High School Musical 2: Sing it All or Nothing Review

I thought my first review would be on Hanazakari no Kimitachi e, the japanese drama. But this is on High School Musical 2: Sing it All or Nothing, the highly anticipated DCOM (Disney Channel Original Movie) for the summer of 2007.

Whoever said DCOM’s were only for kids and tweens? Here I am, on the verge of turning 18. I loved High School Musical. The music was awesome, aside from Zac Efron’s voice which we find out is actually Drew Seeley’s. What I can say, is that it’s sure to be really hard to make a sequel to the most successful DCOM ever.

High School Musical 2 does live up to expectations, at least mine. The music is definately much better than the first, and the dances are a lot more unique. And of course, a lot more drama.

Synopsis: The first High School Musical ended with the callbacks for the Winter Musicale. High School Musical 2 starts just a little bit before summer vacation. None of them can get jobs for the summer until Troy gets a call from Mr.Fulton, the boss at the Lava Springs country club, which Ryan and Sharpay’s parents own. What he doesn’t know is that his newfound employment is part of Sharpay’s plot to lure him away from Gabriella. When she learns that Kelsi has written the perfect song – You are the Music In Me – for Troy and Gabriella to perform at the club’s annual Midsummer Night’s Talent Show, Sharpay makes sure that her “school chums” won’t win like they did in the winter musicale. It’s Sharpay vs. Troy, who begins to experience a world of privilege he’s never known. He’s willing to do anything for the sake of his future.

Commentary
The Good: The fact there is a High School Musical 2, makes a lot of people happy, including myself. The entire cast from High School Musical returns. The music is great. I’d have to say my favorites are Gotta Go My Own Way & All For One.  You just can’t help it but to sing along, or at least hum, if you don’t know the words. I’m a little biased, because I really like Lucas Grabeel. Lucas who plays Ryan a.k.a. Sharpay’s shadow starts Breaking Free and realizes that this could be the Start of Something New. That’s right people. We’re All in This Together. It’s nice to see the new side of his character, and to see how unlike his sister he really is.

The Bad: High School Musical 2 wasn’t really needed…but it’s nice to see. As my sister said, the parts that they danced and sang were the best. When it came to the parts where all they did was talk, it was a little bland. The storyline seemed a little over the top. As for Sharpay, you can really start to see her evil side and seems a lot more over the top than she did in the first High School Musical. Not to mention her hyperness seems a little awkward.

The whole theme to the movie is “staying true to yourself”, which is seen through all the problems Troy creates with his friends.

Overall: I was actually pretty impressed with High School Musical 2. It’s no wonder that High School Musical was such a hit. I was listening to 102.7 KIIS FM (LA radio station) the other day, and Vanessa was on the show.

Host: Why do you think kids like Amber are addicted to this show?
Vanessa: I think because honestly, kids are in starvation for musicals…like it hasn’t been done in so long…and like for me growing up even though it was animated, like Peter Pan and Cinderella and stuff, like it had tons of music in it…and it hasn’t been done in a while…and I think this is the first thing kids can actually latch onto that has singing and dancing and stuff.

Overall, this movie seems to be another hit.
